Mt Kosciusko is Australia's highest mountain and is the key feature of Kosciusko National Park.
In 1998 the Geographical Names Board of NSW (Address PO Box 150 Bathurst NSW) accepted recommendations from various petitioners that Kosciusko should be re-spelt as Kosciuszko to correctly name it for Tadeusz Kosciuszko.
Some of the attached correspondence provides an overview of the history of the discovery of Kosciusko and reasons as to why it was incorrectly spelt and why it should remain as it was.
The Geographic Names Board may have undertaken a community liaison phase. Unfortunately many of us in Kosciusko Huts Association and others interested in the history and culture of the region were totally unaware of this proposal. It would appear that overseas interests and the "political correct" had their way.
Alan Andrews has written lately about other new proposals to rename the mountain after indigenous names. It would appear that even the "Z" might lose out.
